How to send email via Spaceonline

Written on September 6, 2009 – 8:57 pm | by admin

Some ISPs (the people that supply your internet connection) may be blocking port 25 (SMTP) which stops you from using any service other than their own to send email, in an attempt to reduce spam.

If you wish to use the spaceonline server to send email, rather than your ISP, you can try changing your email program to use port 26 for SMTP instead of port 25. You will also need to provide your normal password in the SMTP settings of your mail client for this to work. We provide port 26 as an alternate SMTP port specifically to solve the problem of ISPs blocking port 25. This problem will not occur if you use webmail.

How do I change my port from 25 to 26?

Outlook:

  • From the menu bar: Tools > Accounts > Select your Account > Properties > Advanced
  • Now change the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) setting to 26
  • Click OK, then Finish
  • Restart Outlook

Entourage:

  • From the menu bar: Tools > Accounts > choose account > Account Settings
  • Click Click here for advanced sending options
  • Check the box labeled Override default SMTP port and change the port to 26
  • Close the panel and click OK
  • Close the Accounts window to save your settings

Apple Mail:

  • From the menu bar: Mail > Preferences… > Accounts > Account Information > Outgoing Mail Server  > Edit Server List
  • Select the Advanced tab, click Use custom port and set it to 26
  • Click OK

How to Pay

Written on April 16, 2009 – 10:21 pm | by admin
You can pay for services at spaceonline by either a cheque or PayPal. Accounts should be settled within 14 days of the invoice date. Late payments may mean delay in supply or de-activation of items supplied.

PayPal

I accept payment by PayPal. It’s quick, easy and reliable and you can use it even if you don’t have a PayPal account.
  • If you have a PayPal account, you can login and send the amount to paypal@spaceonline.co.uk. If you prefer, you can email me to request a PayPal invoice.
  • If you don’t have a PayPal account, you can still pay using your credit or debit card. Simply email me requesting a PayPal invoice – you can pay on the web with a credit or debit card using PayPal’s secure payment service.

Cheque

If you prefer doing business without using cards or online shenanigans, you can pay by cheque drawn on any UK bank. Please make cheques payable to John Staplehurst and send to:

Protecting a Directory

Written on October 31, 2007 – 1:06 am | by admin

You can limit access to files on your site by requiring users to type a password to gain access. When users attempt to access a file in a protected directory, the Web server displays a login window. Users with access privileges can enter their user names and passwords to access the directory. Users without access privileges cannot gain access and will see an error page. An example of a directory that should be protected is the /awstats directory – you may not wish everyone to see that access statistics for your website. Read the rest of this entry »

Why does my new account use 20MB already?

Written on September 16, 2007 – 7:20 pm | by admin

Every new account will have some files already installed in it, and these take up about 20MB. The biggest set of files is for the webmail application (SquirrelMail) which takes up about 17MB. If you do not intend to use webmail, and would like to reclaim this disk space, please contact support asking for webmail to be disabled. The other files are for web statistics, scripts etc and should not be deleted.

Spam – how we deal with it

Written on September 12, 2007 – 10:57 pm | by admin

All email received through our servers is processed by anti-spam software called MailFoundry. Decisions about spam are made before the mail is delivered to you, so you should not get spam in your inbox at all, just the daily notification of what emails were blocked. MailFoundry is better than 99% perfect, which means very occasionally an email may be incorrectly considered spam. When this occurs it’s due to a spam rule on our spam filters considering that email spam, so we need to adjust that rule to stop the problem. Read the rest of this entry »
